DH sets up the perfect storm... and tells SS I will hire him for the summer. W.T.F.?

So DH apparently has lost his mind.

My ss16 is notoriously lazy, has to be pushed to do ANYTHING, and then even when he does do it, he does it with minimal effort. SS keeps getting cut from work, so SS told DH he was looking for another job. DH tells him that I will hire him to mow and weed whack on the farm for the summer. True, I am looking to hire some high school kid to work for me all summer, but SS is not the kind of kid I would hire.

I have a barn full of active, motivated, engaged "horsey" kids who adore being here, work really hard, and want to help. If they see me carrying something they run over and offer to help. If they see me doing my chores they ask me whats left that they could do for me. If I say be here at 8 they are here at 7:30 and already have feed started when I get to the barn. If we go to a show they offer to carry my saddle or groom my horse for me. I had chosen one particularly pleasant and motivated young lady for the job, and she is very excited. She's a hard worker, tough and strong. She's so excited to have her first job and to have it be working at the farm. She loves this stuff.

So why would I cast her aside for sullen SS who does half ass work and won't offer to do anything for anyone unless he is pressured into it, and then he does it with huffs and puffs and rolling eyes? SS is also pale as the moon, weak, and complains about EVERYTHING. And DH thinks he's a good fit for a farm hand? Ummm, no.

I mentioned to DH that this was a ridiculous idea and I can't believe he said any such thing to SS. I told him he and I fight enough as it is, and that this was setting up a perfect storm for us to fight and pit he and I against each other with SS in the middle yet again. He claims he told SS that he would be working for me and I would be his boss, which meant he had to do a really good job and not half-ass anything. Perfect way to make it so I have to be the bad guy, DH!!!! Way to go!

I think this storm will blow up before it even gets started though, because last night SS lazied himself out of a job. He only has two chores to do each day, and one is to feed the cats in the house. One of the cats is his personal cat, so this shouldn't be a big deal, right? Well he goes to feed the cats and finds the bin empty of cat food. I tell him there are three bags of cat food in the feed room of the barn, and he could go get one and bring it up to the house. I mention it twice. What does he do? He goes to his room and leaves the cats with no food. I had to go get the food and do his chore. He didn't even care enough to notice if they got food or not. Honestly, if I wasn't so much of an animal welfare person I would take his cat to the shelter because he doesn't take care of it and shouldn't be allowed to keep an animal he refuses to care for. But I won't make the cat suffer for SS's idiocy and laziness. I hate that he gets to keep an animal he won't care for.

Sorry, I'm not hiring someone who shows me again and again that they will do the LEAST possible effort.

WTF was DH thinking? He's going to be home soon, and this is going to be ONE BIG STORM. He can yell all he wants, I'm not giving the kid a job.

Somewhere in DH's mind SS's chores should have nothing to do with giving him a job. Really? Knowing someones performance level, or lack thereof, has no effect on who is chosen? Not in the real world, buttercup.

Good lord no way! Your employees are a reflection of you as a boss! If you have a strong team they will end up resenting you for hiring this lazy twit. Be firm with DH...maybe HE can find a job for him to do this summer and supervise him. Wink
