OT-I just started a new job, and something happened I'd like your opinions on
As of yesterday, I have been on the job for 13 days. I work at a speciality clinic, with 37 rotating doctors, in Central Registration. We answer the hospital switchboard, the outpatient clinic phones, admit patients (both to hospital, ER, and speciality clinic). And schedule appointments.
Wednesday I finally got my scheduling passwords, and started learning that system.
My supervisor is on vacation.
So yesterday, I go in to work, and only one co-worker is there. (there are always two, plus supervisor-who is on vacation). This co-worker told me she is leaving at 2:45-as scheduled. the other co-worker is taking a CPR class and won't be there that afternoon-so I was on my own! A roomful of patients, 3 doctors. And me just being on scheduling the first time the day before. She told me they would switch the hospital phones to the nurses station and have the nurse handle any ER's that come in. But the rest was up to me!
It was very upsetting. I have a little clue about the scheduling, but not much. I am just learning all the extension on the phones. I am just learning the admit screens.
Then the pilot called and one of the drs. had to leave immediately, which meant rescheduling his patients (some already in the waiting room). So about 45 minutes of hectic chaos ensued. and the first co-worker was just getting ready to leave when the one who was in the CPR class showed up.
I waited about an hour, until things calmed down, and asked this co-worker if ANYONE is ever scheduled to work alone. She said No. Even around the holidays, when things are slower, they always schedule two per shift.
I am steaming. I'm sure my supervisor would not have let this happen-I don't think she knows what these girls did/were planning to do. And I also think them scheming to have me work a busy shift like that alone was pretty crappy of them.
I am debating talking to my supervisor about this when she returns. I hate rocking any boats as I've been there less than 3 weeks, but I don't appreciate the position they were trying to force me into. Is this common? I havent even been there long enough to know what each Dr. wants as far as patient sheets, ins., etc and feel really really panicy about this job now.
What would you do?

Maybe talk to your
Maybe talk to your supervisor...but not in a complaining way. Just that you hope you remembered everything, and did the paperwork correctly for the Drs, since it was just you there and it was very busy. Something along those lines, then that gives her the chance to say "What...you were here alone?"
I agree....
I would also express to her any concern you may have had about negatively affecting someones health or treatment should you have a made a mistake (not saying that you did....but the liability that could pose....no one will ever be left alone again)

Thats a great suggestion. I admit that this whole situation has

me wondering just what the heck was going on with those two co-workers. The one who was off in CPR class just pretty much sits and reads a book when she and I are alone....instead of doing any training while the boss is away.
I agree with Hanny,
I would also say that you enjoy doing the work but feel that you need a couple more weeks to be fully competent in it, so in the interm you want to make sure that someone is there with you to prevent any mistakes or misfortunes....
One can only hope!
I agree...do NOT complain,
I agree...do NOT complain, but mention that you hope you did alright with it being so busy since you are new and were by yourself. Don't let on that you felt it was crappy or that you even know this is not how its supposed to be. You need to give off the vibe that you are willing to try to handle anything if you want to work your way up!

In those types of situations I think the key is to keep your cool, don't panic and do the best that you can.
I agree with Hanny and others. Talk with your Sup. from the perspective of asking how she thinks you are doing for 3wks in and that you hoped you handled everything adequately during the crisis.
Let the Sup ask any clarifying question deemed necessary.
Hang in there.

Thanks for the input - you're all right

So I just went in today and acted like all was just great. I've also rethought speaking to my sup. about it. If she brings up any issues that might arise from Thursday, that's when I'll mention the going solo issue. I know it's against regulations-there are to be two on shift at all times, but it's over, I survived, and now it's the weekend so I'm gonna have a big drink!
I suspect it upset so much because there is so much riding on me succeeding at this job. If I wasn't already a bundle of nerves from the issues with H, I'd probably handle things alot better. A fact of which I am very well aware.
To thanks for the calming influence!
BW - hopefully one of the doctors noticed,
and will give your supervisor the 'heads up' when she comes back.
LN-could be. Then I wouldn't have to squeak a word!

That'd be the best!
Here's hoping!
And if they added how well you did 'solo', that would be bonus!
