The magazine subscription I got SD a year ago
Had an interesting, albeit brief, conversation with SD yesterday.
As a bit of background, I've got a problem with subscription boxes, lol. I get three beauty/skin/hair boxes each month and I just recently signed up for a Lootcrate which is chock full of geek/gamer goodies. SD is usually mildly curious about the beauty boxes, but was very curious about the Lootcrate. Ever since it arrived on Friday, she's been asking me all sorts of questions about it.
Well, yesterday was no different. She asked me about if everyone gets the same things, if it's different each month, and how do they pick what to put in the box. And then she said "Someone, I don't know who, but someone got me a subscription to this magazine, Teen Ink it's called. It's got my name on it, so I know someone got it for me. I really liked that magazine, though I think I would like something like this way more. Not that I don't like the magazine, it's great. It's all stuff written by teens, even the media reviews are written by teens, which is great, so it's like people my age writing about things that I might like."
So, I decided to tell her that I got her the magazine. She was surprised and asked me why I never told her. So I said plainly "Well, at the time, you hated me. And I didn't want to make you feel weird about me getting it for you or feel obligated to thank me for it. I got it for you just because I thought you would enjoy it and would possibly want another venue for your writing. Writing is something you are passionate about and it was a quiet way that I could support you without you having any sort of obligation towards me."
She didn't really know what to say after that for a moment, but then she went on to continue telling me how much she liked the magazine. So, that's nice. I'm glad she liked it and I think I did a good job in just silently subscribing her to it without telling her. Based on how positively she talked about the magazine, I think it was definitely for the best that I handled it the way I did.
