O/T for the PMDD ladies

AJanie's picture

I finally "sought help" about my PMDD. Really it was a second opinion because my regular doctor didn't seem to take it too seriously.

I was tired of being swallowed by a black hole every single month for a week, or sometimes longer.

This doctor (very nice lady... kept calling me "sweets" lol) switched me from lexapro to celexa (after telling me how similar they are) and told me to double the dose "the week before menses" (how I believe it was worded).

So, off I went with a drug that is similar to what already doesn't work :? - but hey, she's the doctor.

I am on day 2 and I feel super weird and teary. I haven't checked step talk all day until now, so something HAS to be wrong.

I just hate feeling like a guinea pig - here try this! But it was time. I tried every natural remedy anyone ever suggested. It just wasn't enough.

I guess 2 days is too soon to tell. I just really home this works and I stop feeling super weird soon...

I know a few others on this board (Gimlet, Melanne) mentioned PMDD so I figured I would share.

I don't know much about PMDD, but I do know that any kind of mood altering drug can take a fair amount of time to really settle in. As long as you're handling it ok, try to give it time to work and see how it does for you. Good luck!

It is not a good idea to double a drug overnight. At least this first time try increasing it more gradually. Try a 1/4 or 1/2 more.

Unfortunately, with psychiatric drugs sometimes you do have to experiment a lot to find the right drug. Does this doctor specialize or have extra experience with PMDD? If not, try and find one who does.

You have my sympathy. I used to have just "regular" pms and it was bad enough.

She's a psychiatrist. My OB-gyn didn't take me seriously at all. I can't do hormonal birth control because of migraines, either.

They call it practicing medicine because they haven't gotten it right yet. lol.

Really, quite a bit of being a physician is educated guesses and trial and error application of procedures/medicine.

I think it is helpful to be an informed patient and research the medicine that they suggest you take.

It's like my brother that went on Chantix to quit smoking and basically wanted to blow his brains out. He was a recovering crack addict who already had plenty of depression issues.. Chantix was probably not a great choice.

AJ keep a log of how you feel each day at least 3 times a day. If it doesn't improve in 3 weeks time, call your doctor. It takes our bodies a while to metabolize and figure out what we're putting into them. If you keep a log and see an upswing in your mood over that period of time keep on it. If it continues to fluctuate or you notice you're feeling worse, it probably isn't the one for you.

I am definitely trying to be patient. It would be nice to have an immediate fix. My mom has been on Celexa for a long time... she said "it just helps me be happy to wake up everyday. I seriously love mornings." I told her it would take a little more than Celexa to get me to love mornings.

A log is a great tool. I used it when my YSD was having some problems and it really helped figure out what was wrong.
