Her 2nd marriage, my 1st. I feel like another stepping stone.

So my wife and I have been married for a few months now. We have a SD5, full custody, from her previous marriage. I don't have too many complaints about SD. She's a pretty good kid and my wife is an excellent mother. We have just started trying for a child of our own, too.

My wife is in her early 30's and I'm in my late 20's. What's left me really perplexed the past few months is the feeling that she just doesn't really care about the significance of the things we do together because she has already done it all in her first marriage. Allow me to list what I mean:

- We had a great wedding, but all I heard about from her relatives was her last wedding (and what an ass BF is). We used a photographer that was also one of her relatives and my family was only in a total of 3 of the couple hundred photographs taken. She didn't seem to care.

- She's forgotten my birthday 2 years in a row. Petty, I know. But did she ever forget her first hubby's birthday?

- I'm elated about finally becoming a biological father. She seems to shrug off everything about this. My mother asked her if she could plan a baby shower when the time comes. My wife's response? "Nah, I'm not doing one this time."

- She will spend a half-hour, at least, going on about her work day but will play on her phone while I tell her about mine for more than 5 mins.

- She seems to think that sex cures everything. I suppose for some guys it does, but not me. Whenever she does something that pisses me off, she will automatically try to fix it by suggesting we just go to the bedroom.

- My parents pulled out all the stops the past few holidays to make sure SD5 had a great time. They really treated her like their own grandchild. Of course, there hasn't been so much as a thank you from my wife for this. My parents requested that SD5 come over to their house so my niece can have someone to play with for a couple hours. My wife told her mother this, who had already made plans with SD5 an hour before, and her mother stated "Oh whatever. They're not even her real grandparents."

- I am not included in the decisions made about SD5. School fieldtrips, weekend plans, etc. are brought to me days after the fact or minutes before they take place.

And here's the best for last:

- My wife's ex-husband, SD5's BF, lives out of state. He ran off because he had warrants and has refused to pay child support for years. Two weeks ago, he called my wife out of nowhere and asked, if he payed for it and contributed with child support, if we would all take a weekend trip to his place so that he can see his daughter. Nevermind the fact that I don't have time for such things, he should drive here himself if he wants to see his daughter. But the funny things was that my wife did not immediately say no. She told him that she would let him know after she talked to me about it. I said not only no, but HELL NO! She later apologized for not immediately saying no to the proposition.

Sorry if this is too long to read. I just feel like my wife thinks of me as, at best, a walking ATM that also supplies sperm, or, at worst, her girlfriend/BFF that is there just for a shoulder to cry on every once in awhile.

You sound like a nice guy who feels unappreciated. Forgetting your birthday is pretty bad. She sounds distracted. Put your birthday on the calendar of her phone. This site is perfect for expressing your insecurities and hurt feelings. Being a stepparent feels like an afterthought a lot of the time...but we can stand up for ourselves.
She's not really interested in your day and only asks to be polite so keep it short unless there is something interesting to report. It's not fair, it's just what is.

This sounds like disrespect to me, If you don't ask for respect you won't get it, she has also disrespected your parents, could she be holding back so she dos'nt get as hurt again? you need to have a conversation about how she makes you feel, some woman would go crazy for a man who acts like you do, maybe she got into the habit of acting like this in her previous relationship, people can pick up bad habits, whatever her reasoning only commuication can help, if it comes down to disrespect you must tell her it is unacceptable, good luck honey.

Wow that's really unfair to you. My DH was married twice before me but he still gets excited when he does something with me that he's done with someone else because it's the first time he's done it with ME. I'm surprised this kind of behavior hasn't surfaced prior to getting married.

The only thing I can suggest is have a heart to heart (calmly) if you can't do it on your own...go to a counselor.

Good luck you seem like such a sweetheart.

Thank you for your replies. I personally think it's a cop-out to say she's acting this way so she doesn't get hurt again.

I love her to death, but it really seems like I was chosen because I am the polar opposite of what her ex was. I can keep a job for an extended period of time. I don't have a single tattoo on my body. I work out and stay healthy. I have no criminal record and have never even gotten a ticket. And most importantly, I plan on sticking around when my wife has my child. In short, I am predictable.

I know this is a forum to talk mostly about your stepkids, but I feel as a stepparent, and especially as a stepDAD, we are automatically seen as chumps who are there to clean up someone else's mess while that someone else doesn't face the consequences.

I wonder if many women, although they are initially thankful for someone to step in as a father figure, will inherently have much less respect for a man that chooses to take care of a child that is not biologically their's, even if they plan on having children with that man. Any thoughts on this?

Wow... I get you... it's just weird to see a guy in this predicament. I am the third wheel in my marriage. My dh is married to his 10 year old son and sometimes to his ex wife. I feel you.. I mean have you tried counseling?? I know sometimes this make a big difference. Don't give up.. you are right this is probably a defense mechanism. Be patient... talk to her...

I think it's a cop out to say she's protecting herself from being hurt. I'm not saying we don't all carry some sort of baggage from past relationships but if it's so bad she can't even find interest in your daily life then she definitely wasn't ready to move on. I hate to say this but based on your post it sounds like she settled or just picked someone. "I don't want to be alone so...let's see...oh yea he looks good. I'll marry him" I definitely agree you should get some counseling.

Well for a start don't have any kids and don't be afraid to tell her why.

Some of your stuff seems petty but taken as a whole you've got a wife who isn't that much into you. ATM and boy toy stud come to mind. I.e. there when needed but otherwise on the back burner.

My advise to everyone is don't marry someone with kids until the kids are grown. Its not too late for you to pull out and start over with a woman who hasn't 'been there done that'.

Thanks so much for all your thoughts. Very insightful. I will give it some time and have a heart to heart with her this week.
