OT - Swimwear
Reading through the comments on another blog got me thinking.,.
There needs to be TWO swimming pools at every location and all beaches should be divided in half with a brick wall. I think one area for the people who wear skimpy bathing suits (or nothing st all if they prefer because honestly those triangles aren’t hiding anything) and a separate area for people like me who are disgusted by those people.

I'd prefer a NO CHILDREN
I'd prefer a NO CHILDREN section. I don't care what people wear/don't wear - I'm there for the water!!
Yes!
Yes!
I am torn on this. I take
I am torn on this. I take BS8 to a state park near us with a huge public pool during the summer. I used to be all judge judy about swim wear, but last summer I toned it down a notch. I kind of feel like if you can rock a skimpy bikini, then by all means rock it. It probably won't last, you'll have kids, eat a few too many burgers or whatever and you'll be wearing the one piece in a few years and feeling self conscious and chubby. I also used to think that some people had no business wearing a bikini.. or any swimsuit for that matter... but you know, if THEY are confident about their busted can of biscuits and cottage cheese, then good for them right? I can always just look away.
Just to be clear I don’t care
Just to be clear I don’t care what kind of body you have (or don’t have) I just don’t want to see it
oh my... let's just break out
oh my... let's just break out the burka wear for all of us that don't have a body you want to look at...lol.
Seriously though. My OSD used to make judgemental remarks about people and that they "shouldn't be wearing that etc.." Sometimes it was ill fitting clothes and I reminded her that they might not be able to afford new ones. When it was someone was "too fat" to wear a swim suit I reminded her that there is no amount of spandex that will hide the fact that someone is fat. What should they do? Should they just not go to the beach or pool because some hot young 17 YO is offended by the sight of cellulite? A 17 yo that I might have reminded her has both youth and genetics on her side to be tall and slim?
I am pretty much a live and let live person when it comes to the swim-wear game. The fact that some people actually make it to the pool in swim wear is probably a great victory over their insecurities.
Good point, ESMOD. A friend
Good point, ESMOD.
A friend of mine was SO happy to wear a swimsuit. It was a tasteful one-piece. Yes, she was fat. BUT she'd lost 80 POUNDS and it was the first time she'd worn a swimsuit since childhood.
Don't like it; don't look.
Lol you are right! Maybe I
Lol you are right! Maybe I should convert to Islam or stay away from public swimming places!
" but you know, if THEY are
" but you know, if THEY are confident about their busted can of biscuits and cottage cheese, then good for them right? I can always just look away. Eye-wink"
LMAO thanks for the laugh!
I’m older. Does anyone
I’m older. Does anyone remember Bodyglove brand swimsuits? Damn... the stuff I used to rock at the pool and beach.
I’m very live and let live when it comes to this. If you have the body, or don’t, and feel comfortable in you own skin, AND want to wear the least amount of swimwear in hot @ss weather? Go for it.
Discussing other people’s bodies, and what they should, or should not wear, especially in or near water, is shamey.
I am not small by no means
I am not small by no means and I still wear a bathing suit. I agree that people should be able to wear what they want as long as they are comfortable and not be shamed. However I still don't want my children wearing thongs/triangle tops covering their nipples. Just my opinion. I feel that there is a time and a place for that and on a family vacation is not the place.
I can’t say I’ve ever seen a
I can’t say I’ve ever seen a preteen or teen wear a thong or barely there triangle top bathing suit. I think that’s a stretch, but okay. Do you live in Rio de Janeiro per chance?
California, Florida, North
California, Florida, North Carolina...anywhere we have nice beaches, you can find teen girls in g-strings and triangle nipple covers.
Nope, I live in the US and I
Nope, I live in the US and I have! If you have never seen a teen in a thong/triangle top then you haven't met my SD. My SD16 at the time came out of our hotel onto the beach in a full on thong and triangle top that barely covered her nipples.
I'm sure you are referring to
I'm sure you are referring to my recent post. When SD was 16 she came out of our hotel with a thong and a top that barely covered her nipples. I was mortified! I expressed to DH that I felt she should cover up and his response was "I guess that's how they make bathing suits these days". Sorry DH I can take her to WalMart and find her about 20 different suits more appropriate for a family vacation. If you want to wear a suit like that save it for your honeymoon or when your are an adult and vacationing with your friends not with your family. We were with our entire family, my mom, dad, brother, SIL, young nieces etc. What example does that set for the younger kids? It's ok to walk around half naked? Maybe I am old school, maybe I am too modest but leave something to the imagination. I'm ok with teens wearing a bikini, but please be appropriate.
We've really got to do
We've really got to do something about all these dangerous hills people are dying on.
I think once you (general “you”) come to terms with the fact that everyone views sex (the act of it)/sexuality/body acceptance differently, it will relieve a lot of worry and stress off of your shoulders. You can want to shield a 16 year old all day long, but believe me, if she is set on wearing what she wants to wear - she will wear it.
It is not a woman’s job to dress accordingly, especially when it comes to swimwear, which we are talking about here, with the sole mission to police the thoughts and behavior of the opposite sex - or prudish women.
I've never had a problem with
I've never had a problem with anyone wearing a bikini until MSD 16 at the time ran around at my family reunion in the skimpiest bathing suit EVER. Like you JUST met my family and the pool is all the way on the other side of the property and here you are where all of the male relatives are and you are just lounging around, or standing in the most sexual poses. It was embarrassing.
Other than that display I do not have a problem with what people wear when they go swimming.
Can we all just take a moment
Can we all just take a moment and reflect back on how uninhibited we were at 16? Or 20?
Personally, I wore some pretty skimpy one pieces. Extremely low cut chest. Cut-out sides, high arch in the bum region (it was late eighties, early nineties okay? 8))
I was so damn clueless, I was thinking of the awesome tan I was going to get, opposed to how my male friends were going to react. And it shouldn’t have even been a worry for me to begin with.
Agreed, momjeans. Swimsuit
Agreed, momjeans.
Swimsuit considerations for me:
* proper fit
* doesn't ride up/down
* covers my 'unmentionables'
* is not see-thru (happened at a CHURCH outing!)
* must be a halter, racer, or t-back (tank cuts chafe my shoulders because I'm a swimmer)
I’m a swimmer, too. I’m all
I’m a swimmer, too.
I’m all about a nice solid black, racer-back one piece Speedo suit.
I once exited the water
I once exited the water bleeding from both shoulders. My suit had chafed me so badly, that it took off my skin!! That's the last time I owned a tank-top suit.
I built calluses one year in
I built calluses one year in high school because the required team suit was a tank top... lots of bleeding for the first bit... It HURT.
Probably part of why I can't wear a bikini. Seems very UN-functional to me. I need to be sure I can move around in positions I may not even use (just in case) without anything falling off or causing issues. PLUS that way when I wipe out surfing I know nothing isn't going to come off. But I'm probably just paranoid
The first time I travelled to
The first time I travelled to the Caribbean, I was shocked at the number of European men in speedos, with all their junk and hair sprouting out everywhere.... lol.... being held back by a small piece of fabric that looked like it was about to burst at the seams! But then, I've gotten soft and flabby in my old age and I love the water too much not to flaunt my excess baggage in a bathing suit for others to gawk. Summer's coming, run!
My only real issue is when
My only real issue is when the ones wearing the skimpy clothing get pissed that people are looking at them. Years ago I watched a late teen/early 20s wearing a stringy bikini go completely ballistic on a couple who happened to look over at her. They weren't staring at her creepily, they were just walking by along the beach and people-watching as they walked. She was screaming about how insulting and sexist it was that they were looking at her "just because I wanted to look sexy for me today doesn't mean I wanted YOOOooooOOU looking at meeeeee!!" (Hard to get the whiny tone in text)
If you want to look sexy for yourself, go for it. If someone's pulling the creepy stare, call them out calmly. But bitching because you are out in public and other people aren't reading your mind and averting their eyes is entitled and stupid.
People like that are a total
People like that are a total different breed. I don’t get that sort of mentality at all.
I say if you’re comfortable
I say if you’re comfortable with your body, good for you! I am not ready to retire my bikinis, I love them. I personally prefer the ones that cover a bit more (higher waisted bottoms).
Maybe you should get your own
Maybe you should get your own pool then??
I'm sorry but I never go to public pools, every one pees in the water, I might as well stay at home and swim in my toilet, I do not like looking at ass and boobs, thus I stay away. There's enough beaches on Mars where we have privacy, I make use of that.
It is every one's right to wear what they want and if they have no self respect by showing too much, then I'm simply going to avoid it...
Acra, everyone pees in the
Acra, everyone pees in the ocean/sea/lake/waterfall/river/pond... And don't forget the fish poop!
I'd be more focused on swimming and sand castle building than what people are wearing. I always choose a spot as far away from people as possible!
Aniki... I see it this way -
Aniki...
I see it this way - Ocean water is very healthy and well the ocean is very veyr big, even if you pee next to me there's a 2% chance your pee will touch me,
Pond's are for frogs not for humans, River... not only pee hon, dead animals as well, but again it's flowing water thus slim change of standing in your pee, same with waterfall... Lake, nah will never swim in a lake it's disgustingly dirty...
SWimming pool s,a;; area with allot of pee in it, 90% change I'm standing in your pee
