O/T but what do you ladies do to save money?

purpledaisies's picture

I want to save as much as possible for vac. so what do you ladies do to save money?

this is what i do on a dady to day basis:

1. I buy rock face scrub pads and I squeeze the excess out and then when the pads are gone I put more pads in to make it last longer.

2. I buy the cheapest things I can as long as it works.

3. I cut my fabric softener sheets in half.

4. I buy A LOT of stuff at second hand stores.

5. I don't like to go out to eat much but dh does so i have learned to use the dollar menu's.

I can't think of anything right now but I know I do more I just have to think.

DH and I started extreme saving about 6 months before we got married and were able to pay our entire wedding on our own in cash. Here are a few guidelines we follow.

Eating at home is a huge way to cut spending. Especialy if you bring your own lunch to work everyday.

Before going to the grocery store, make a weekly menu and a list of things to make those meals. Then at the store only buy things on the list and nothing else.

Give each other a monthly allowance on B/S expenses (clothing, meals not eaten at home, movies, going out, etc). Once your B/S money is gone, that's it. No more frivolous or unnecessary expenses.

Not sure if you have cable or anything like that, but a good alternative is to cut the cable bill by getting something like a Netflix subscription.

Costco and Sam's
Thrift stores
Invested in a water filtration system instead of buying bottled
Called the cable company and got a better deal
Make coffee at home instead of buying Starbucks everyday

We're a huge family, so some of this stuff really only works if you're a large family. Sorry, everybody else. We are 3 adults, 6 kids, including 2 tweenaged boys.

Costco. I shop in bulk bigtime. Some stuff isn't cheaper, so you really have to do the math.

I use powdered milk for cooking.

I garden and have a hobby farm. We produce about 25% of our own food, plus we sell rabbits and poultry that we raise, sell our fresh eggs, and sell some food products that we make from the things we grow.

I shop at thrift and consignment stores as much as possible. There are things I don't buy second hand, such as undies, shoes, socks, stuff like that. But for jeans and clothes, etc, you can really find some good deals. I'm lucky in that the boys are the oldest, and then my girls are all pretty much each about 1-2 sizes difference. So I've learned to go to thrift stores or kids' consignment places, buy high end gently used stuff, such as Gap, Gymboree, Lands End, Eddie Bauer, etc, and it will last right down through the littlest one. The Target and Wal Mart brands, although cheaper, don't usually make it through one child.

I clip coupons. Fill the freezer when meat is on sale, then don't buy it when it's high.

I only wash clothes in cold water.

We just about don't eat out at all. I spend more money on groceries and make a few restaraunt type meals at home for a fraction of the price.

We got Netflix and bought a big screen TV. I buy the boxes of Movie Theater candies at the grocery store and allow the kids to earn "coupons" to buy them through weekly chores. Then on Friday nights we have family movie night here for only the cost of some microwave popcorn . It was costing $150+ to take our family to a movie once a month or so. The TV paid for itself within 6 months of not seeing movies out anymore. Plus between taking little people to the bathroom and whining, it wasn't really fun. Now we just sneak off and see movies, just the adults.

I drive a car that's paid off and save a bundle on insurance.

I save all the food off the kids plates at the end of meals and feed it to our chickens. It cuts feed costs.
