My Ex Husband is trying to quit smoking and has turned into a real jerk!

Long story short my husband and I have a great relationship with my ex husband. We are all friends and it is really great for my kids that we are. But since my ex husband is trying to quit smoking he is like a different person. He is miserable all the time and my kids don't want to see him. His new wife is a heavy smoker so I think that is not helping. I tried to talk with him about how awful he is being to everyone but he doesn't see it. Has anyone broke the habit? Any advise would help.

Try to convince him to go away for a week alone lol I quit smoking due to pregnancy and I stayed at my parents house while they were away for a good few days simply because I was terrible to my husband and stepdaughter. Unfortunately it's the nature of quitting an addition like nicotine; you get extremely irritable and moody. It's in everyone's best interest to either 1. take a vacation or 2. try and limit his time around others by staying in his bedroom or something.

I think my husband could suggest that to him. Not sure if he could do that with his job. But that is great advice.

SO and I started vaping. Is it the best option-no but I'm down to .03 nicotine level and SO is at 0 nicotine.

It kept me from choking people.

I used the patch years ago to quit and kept me from committing a felony.

In the end.. time should help. But, he may have been using his smoking as a self soothing action and probably needs to figure out how to now replace that in a healthy manner.

Has your ex tried a medication called Chantix. My exSIL did that and has successfully quit. Mind you I heard through the grapevine that she has replaced food with the cigarettes, however that is a much healthier alternative.

Dovina I'm not sure if he is quitting because of his health or the cost. My ex and his wife both smoke a pack a day. At about 6 dollars a pack here in Ohio they are spending over $350 a month. That is crazy! But I have to admit he is a lot nicer when he smokes. }:)

North of the border I believe cigarettes are about $13 per pack. Its surprising to see how many people smoke, health wise and money wise! Another good thing here besides the high cost to deter smoking they banned menthol cigarettes because usually younger people start smoking by using menthol.

$13 per pack. How can people afford that? And if 2 people smoke in a household all of the money would be for cigarettes. So glad I don't smoke.

Sorry you're having to deal with the devil himself now, I had quit once, using patches as directed, on about the third day,I was with DH and we stopped for gas. When he came out from paying, he open the door, tossed a pack onto my lap and told me to smoke one before I ended up in prison! He was smoking to.
A few years later I asked him about quitting, he said if I could do it (without going Cujo)that he'd quit ,too. I quit, with patches(21mg +14mg at once) . After 6 weeks, he decided that I had quit for good so he quit cold turkey, I told him after smoking for 35 yrs, that cold turkey wasn't a good idea. A week into it, he had a heart attack! The doctor said it probably would have happened eventually but the stress from withdrawal had brought it on. However, living in a remote area, he was medivacted from our local hospital, I drove to the bigger hospital and on the way, I stopped and bought a pack.
I kept the smoking to a minimum, only at work, and I would go to the wood shed to talk on the phone. One trip to the wood shed, I opened the door and what did I find! DH smoking! So it was back on, That was 12 yrs ago and we're both still at.
Good Luck!

We nearly broke up due to DH stopping smoking. (was SO then) He was a total Ahole!

And he did not see it either. EVERY ONE else did but not him. It totally changed his personality. Im sorry/glad to say that he picked it back up after about a year and returned right back to the great sweet man that everyone knows. He did the whole cold turkey too.

I second the patch. It does not entirely reduce cravings, but it DOES keep one from committing homicide.

Tell him to hit the spa

Somebody told me when ss11 asked me to quit for his birthday gift (yes little shit guilted me into quitting)
hit the sauna for the first 3 days after your last cigarette

you'll sweat the nicotine out
so I did.
I also did an insane workout week-lots of high energy exercises

mainly boxing/kickboxing-to release the violent tendencies.

i used the NicoDerm CQ patch and it really helped.

And yes I quit smoking for my 35th and SS's 10th birthday (we share a birthday)
No regrets
