He has facial hair and a job but he’s still the baby

Preface: Shocking as it may sound I like my skids. I don't mind that they come here. They are both good kids, one almost 19 and in college and one 17 in HS with an almost full time job. There is a history of "but they are only X" from both DH and BM, my DS19 over the years has been trusted to handle himself more than these kids, and I think the skids need and deserve the chance for that same level of trust.

DH announced to me that YSS will be staying with us this coming weekend. Okay, good to have the heads up. DH proceeds to tell me it's because BM is out of town so she asked if YSS could stay.

The kid is 17, has a job near her house that goes late, we live 20-25 minutes away, and they have a dog (BM is paying a neighbor to watch the dog). Why wouldn't it be okay for him to stay at her house? He's never been trusted to stay alone and he's very responsible.

Yeah, that's silly. 17 is plenty old enough to stay home alone, if he's responsible.  I went off to college at 17.

Dang. When one of my grandparents passed away, my parents left my oldest brother in charge of house and kids, ages 9, 12, 13, and 16. He was 17yo and our parents were gone for a week. Oh, how times have changed.

BM may fear a high school party at her house if SS is home alone. Even the best of kids can invite a couple of friends over and that turns into a couple of more , and suddenly you have a houseful of kids who heard there is a party at SS's house as his parent is out of town.

Happened every time my parents were out of town..lol.  We always had at least a few friends over.

My brother got caught (I was off at college) when my parents had a car accident and had to come home early.. house was a wreck.

The first time I let DS stay alone to watch the house, XH cruised by (drove past, did not go in) just to check there were no shenanigans. We also had a neighbor on alert. It would be easy for DH and BM to do that too.
