Car $$ for OSS follow up

ITB2012's picture

I was curious. Perhaps I was too hasty on my opinion so I looked up cars of that make, year, and model, oh and similar mileage.

They (BM/OSS) could have bought the same one for the 4K they just spent to repair the one they have or 5k on a year newer with more options.

And yet it’s possible DH is thinking he will pay up to a quarter, 1k, of it. ‘Cause BM is struggling. Then she should have gotten a second estimate and opinion on the car.

Shoot me

My question is - did BM fail to have the car looked at/driven by someone who knew what they were doing and then buy a car with two bad axles, or did SS do something that damaged the axles?  Does your DH know what BM paid for the car?  Maybe she got it for $500 knowing there was axle damage, and this is her way of getting SS and DH to chip in for the car itself.

yes, she failed to ask around

im guessing OSS did not damage the car. Dumb stuff they each do usually gets back to me.

Hes been driving it for over a year so I doubt it was purchased cheap and with known damage

Will not cost 4 K.  There has to be major thing wrong to get that high,   BM bought this car cheap knowing DH will pay for some of the repairs

It's a pretty unusual repair, as well as a stupid one. I could understand suspension repairs being necessary on the front end since it supports more weight and has more parts, but both axles? BM is either an idiot and misunderstood, or she's being scammed, or is a.scammer.herself.

Did your DH see a receipt? Like, a real printed one from an auto body shop? And did BM pay it all already, or is she making payments to the repair shop?

My response would be that I need a copy of the receipt AND a way to pay the shop directly. Or I would need to see the credit card or bank statement showing BM or SS was the one that paid it.

When I made my appalled face and questioned the validity of it and said he should ask for the receipt he said it was in OSSs room. Until he went to get it he hadn’t looked at it.

I have a friend who knows cars and even that make and model so I’m going to ask for an opinion.

(And, yes it’s paid already.)

Even replacing one axle can cost upwards of $5K. It's a very expensive repair. My DH slid on some ice last year and hit a median, which jacked up the frame. We only owed $4,000 left on it, so it was totalled.

That said, he should never, ever, never agree to pay for something like this unless he has 1. The full story of how it happened (accident report? Axles don't spontaneously break.) And 2. A receipt from the shop that fixed it. Any money he agrees to pay should be directly to the mechanic, not his son or the mother.

A repair like this would take weeks. Was the kid without his vehicle for a decent period of time? Did it even happen?
