Mt Dew for a child with ADHD
Well, I have a question lets say you have a overly hyper child (the doctor confirms ADHD) put them on the meds would you give them the medication and then follow it up with a Jault drink. Hello how stupid can you be. The child is already overly active not really in a horrible way, but add the vault to the equasion and it equals diaster. So here we are out in public at the crack of dawn and her mother has brought a large bag of chips and a vault to drink. Then not even 20 mins after she has downed this drink, she is yelling at her to settle down and calm down. Just being completely stupid. It's enough to drive me crazy.....................
More on the ADHD, so last night we are at a game with the kids, and the ADHD child shows up with a Mt. Dew, not only did she drink hers, but then drank the rest of her mothers. I ask you what the heck is that about. I can't wait to tell the Dr.; I mean really if you child is on a drug to help chemically balance (which I disagree with) why submit them to something as strong as Mt Dew? Someone please help me make since of this. My head hurts........

Bad Combination
ADD and Mt. Dew - the two should never be mixed. They are hyper enough without added caffeine intake.
I've tried to learn
I've tried to learn everything I could about ADD (medicate or not)and I found that information from different sources is often contridictory and it's hard to waiver someone who believes the pros over the cons & vice versa. It's a long standing argument b/t dr.s teachers, me & X.... (Contrary to my ex.. the rest of us mentioned do believe in treating a disorder with whatever tools are availible..including meds..if it improves the kids quality of life, performance, social skills, and ultimately their self esteem.)
But there has been a warning issued (a couple days ago) that ADD meds have caused death in some children with pre-existing conditions such as heart problems, hyper-active thyroidism, etc.,
Thyroid problems run in my family, including me, so I know that when your body is revved up due to chemical imbalances ... your heart races..palpates..etc. I assume that the complication/with the ADD meds occur when the stimulant from the meds is boosted by the revved up metabolism...and strains the heart..resulting in death.
I have never had one of those "rev" type drinks..I don't know for sure what they do to a body. Caffine, these drinks are also chemical stimulants... I think its downright dangerous.
I know you don't believe in
I know you don't believe in meds for ADD..lots of people don't...I respect that..I have good freinds on both sides of the issue as well...and I am open to any and all suggestions.
But I'm at a loss..I've tried so many things with my son.... we got his med dosage adjusted .. and he is having the best year ever!! He is happy, he's never gotten along better with his Dad..all relationships
He has friends calling the house wanting to play with him....that has never happened in the past. (His sister is very popular, but the phone never, ever rang for him..always her...it was heartbreaking at times..you could see the pain in his eyes..body language)
His teacher this year says he's a genious...instead of he's in danger of failing. He's getting A's for the first time...
He is less whiny, mopey, and just cracks me up...he's developing a great sense of humor.. He's beginning to feel good about himself and it shows
I've always managed his behavior effectivly, he's a figity guy..but not disrespectful or brash ..he always says please & thank you., etc.
I attribute these positive changes in his life to the meds...nothing else has changed.
I am very concerned about these new reports..... God!! Things are finally going so well for him...
