Allowances

I'm hoping to get some feed back on this topic. DH and I would like to start giving SS10 and DD11 (STB 12) an allowance. I've read articles that say it should just be money you give them to teach them how to manage money, not tied into chores and others that say it should be tied into performing chores around the house. Both DH and I would like them to earn their allowance so in other words, we don't want to give them money for no reason. Some say that tying allowance to chores will make the kids think that they shouldn't help out around the house without expecting compensation. For what chores should we give an allowance? Things that they normally aren't responsible for that would help us out i.e. taking out the trash, packing/unpacking the dishwasher, doing laundry and NOT the things that they ought to do (like cleaning their rooms)?

We give our three children an allowance. It is based on things they do to help out the family. We dont pay them for folding their own clothes, cleaning their own room, caring for the family pet, etc. If they do dishes other than their own, fold others clothes, help clean in areas other than their room, etc. (without being asked or complaining) they are given an allowance. Their allowance is based on their age and how much they contribute. They usually keep a list of the things they have done for when allowance time comes on Friday.

i dont really have any advice in this area, as my sd is still young, but my mom gave us money for chores when we were younger, I think when we were 11 and 12, it was 5 dollars a week, then when we got older (i believe when i was 16) it went up to 15 dollars every two weeks. Then i got a job, so she quit giving me allowance Smile I like the idea of giving the kids $$ if they do things that you dont ask (some things should be expected, like the their rooms being clean, and possibly doing their own laundry-i had to start doing my own when i was 12) like mopping, vacuuming, folding ALL the clothes/putting away the towels, dishes, mowing the lawn, dusting, walking the dogs etc.
