A Graduation Present for the Skid Who Has Everything

BettyRay's picture

I'm looking for some ideas for a HS graduation present for SS18. He has so must it's hard to come up with something. DH and I got him a watch and had it engraved for his 18th Birthday. I'm out of ideas and DH will give him money - I'd rather give SS18 something instead of a check.

Thanks in advance!

My Dad gives the boys a hand carved box, like a jewelry box almost, its a keepsake box.
Handmade with a plate engraved on it "From Papa and Grandma" and the book "Oh the places you will go" by Dr. Seuss

I had thought of packing all his stuff up since DH's new favorite line is: "Well he's 18 now, adult it's his choice if he wants to do XYZ."

My response is always: "Well if that's the case SS18 can chip in for utilities and food and do his own laundry. Just cause he's legal doesn't mean he's grown. Our home our rules."

Sure he is an adult but would DH let him trash his credit with those entrapping credit card 'deals' that hang around community colleges? Would he let him choose to do drugs? Choose to drink and drive?

I mean everyone still needs some guidance. If the kids wants to choose to play video games all night and sleep all day then he should fund his choices in his own place.

One if the best gifts BS20 was his Aunts and Grandpa on my late husbands side all went in and got him gift certificates at all the restaurants on campus and around the area. He had a nice time using all of them and they talked about it and could ask him if he tried the different places. That was the most thoughtful gift. Another Aunt went to the Bookstore and put a basket together of all things from his school. Another was gift cards to the campus bookstore. I make him pay for his books, so that was nice too.

When I graduated college, my parents bought me a couch. God I loved that couch. It was the first NEW thing I had owned that wasn't from craigslist or my parents house (like my bed).

Maybe you could get him something he will really need for his dorm? This may sound lame, but a memory foam mattress pad. OMG CHANGED MY LIFE in college. Worth every penny. People used to come to sit on my bed and hang out just because it was so comfortable.

My nephew graduates next week. I'm giving him a bunch of gift certificates to the restaurants, supermarkets and stores near his campus. I plan to give him the same type of gift for Christmas.
