What is your average weekly grocery bill? Mine runs between $100.00 to $110/wk

bewitched's picture

This figure includes detergent, cleaning items, dog food, everything except personal beauty items, clothing, etc.

H thinks it's way to high. He eats most of his meals out, I eat out maybe once a week. I am figuring this for 1.5 people, as he is not here except for a couple of days a week. It skyrockets when his darlins are here-as H prepares whatever SD17 wants, regardless of whether we have the ingredients here.

My folks grocery bill is nearly the same as mine. But they don't have any pets, and they are older, eat very little.

So I'm curious if what I'm paying for groceries here is out of line or not. We only have one store, so there's no such thing as comparison shopping. Sad

Mine runs $200 - $270 a week.

There are seven of us though. Two growing boys that eat like horses.

What’s the Average Grocery Bill for a family of 5

I’m a hard working father of 6 kids in “single income” house hold. 3 of my kids live with my ex, and 3 live with my new wife and I. We have 3 kids. A 2 year old, 1 month old, (both in diapers) and a 15 year old.

$300.00 a week, my wife say she needs for Grocery and house supplies.

My ex is killing me for $360.00 a week.

I pay $395.00 week for health insurance for the whole family.

Plus rent, phone, gas, electric, cable, Auto Insurance for 2 cars, cell phones, Life Insurance, auto payment $220.00 per month ... I’m sure I missing plenty more here in my calculations... Oh hey! I live in New England, the HEATING BILL!

I have to work 100 hours a week to keep even, I’m getting older every week, and soon my body will not be able to put out enough hours to keep up. I ready for death when ever it comes my way.... the sooner the better.

I have 3 people in my family and our bill runs just about that much if not more....We have animals also,,,,It depends on how low things get...laundry detergent, shampoo, tolietries are outrageous....It is almost cheaper for a small family to eat out...Imean by the time you by the stuff to make a salad, potato and Steak..you could have went out, eat, spent less and not had the hassle and the mess...

Chel Bell's picture

at all. That's how much I spend on our family of 3. Factor in diapers, wipes, and other non food items that go along with the weekly shopping, it gets pretty expensive. Have your DH try to shop for less, and get all you need....could be an eye opener for him."~waiting on the world to change~"

As you know there is 5 of us and 1 dog (she's my listening ear) and groceries are about $100 to $150 like Nicole said depending on how low things are.
Items are so expenses and unfortunatly all groceries are nessarties. It's not as if you can say oh I wont buy any toothpaste this week to save money so I just wont brush my teeth for a week .

What your spending seems normal and seeing that your H does much more spending on SD17 than you he should really shut his mouth or I will shut it for him ;).

I'm at about 140-180 a week, mostly just for FH and I, SD for 4 meals only. It usually all fits into like 5 bags too. I really have no clue what I'm spending so much damned money on either, but even when I try to cut down on the costs, bargain shop, plan meals, it still ends up right in this ball park....:?

There are 5 of us including FSS1 and 4 cats so our weekly bill can be anywhere from 75 to 125 per week depending on what we are low on. I use a lot of coupons so I get more for my dollar. I also shop the ads since we have 2 different stores in town. This past week, one store had buy one get one free hams, so I found 2 smaller ones and bought them. I got 2 nice size hams which will make up to 10 meals between the 2 of them for about 25 bucks. I also make double batches of stuff and freeze half so I have a quick meal for later and I do freeze single servings of stuff so anyone can grab a quick meal without much work. I also give these single serves to my brother who is recently separated and can't cook very well. I just heard about a website that helps you save money on your grocery bill and I am going to try it out.

I just checked it out and saw it costs $$ to join, are your savings substantial enough to warrant it? I tend to shop the peripherals of the store (fruit, veggies, meats & dairy) I don't buy a lot of prepacked snack/preserved foods, would it still be worth it for me? I guess to try for a buck it's worth it...

Coupons-I used to use them all the time when I was raising my boys. Unfortunately, they went by the way long ago-we don't get the newspapers, so miss any of those-tho our local paper never has them anyway.

I too cook huge batches when I prepare meals-I freeze the extra in single serving containers and H takes them to the apartment with him.

Have to check out the website; tho cutting down the grocery bill right now probably won't do much good-H will just spend the extra on SD17 or poker :barf:

We have it budgeted for 100/week, but we started an excel file in Jan. last year. It's a game for me to see what percent I can save every week. We decided that we can actually probably do 75/week. I say it would be almost impossible to do that if we didn't have Sunflower market for produce, though. Lettuce for 88 cents. Tomatoes for 77 cents. I love it.

To every thing there is a season.

Go to Betty Crocker.com and register, it has great coupons. There's another site called Shop4Freebies where you can get free samples of just about everything. Walmart has a site where you can get free samples also. I've only been going to them for a couple of months but I've already gotten samples of everything from dog food to shampoo. It's all brand names too. Another thing I do is whatever I save from specials and coupons I put in my rainy day bank. It may not seem like much at first but it does add up.

Tell you DH (and in your case, whenever I see the letters "DH" I immediately think of the words "Dick Head" and NOT "Dear Husband"!)

Anyway, tell DH that if he's TRULY concerned about the out-of-control spending that's going on in your home, HE should cut back on the more unnecessary spending items that are going on in the home...

Oh, I don't know, things like, hmmmmm...say, the matching shoes for him and his Princess.....

EWWWWWWWW....still totally grossed out by that!

And PS- your grocery bill is NOT above average for you! He's just being a "DH"!

For 1.5 people, might be a tad high, but not too off. We have 2 adults, one 5 yr old and a baby thats on baby food. And 2 dogs. We spend about $120 a week.

CT is a very expensive place to live in general. I noticed that things cost more across the boards when I moved here. I also often decide what I'm going to get before I get there, a cut of meat or something, a ham or pork loin or wild salmon, I go there and buy it regardless of whether it's on sale or not, b/c that's what I'm I'm in the mood to cook. And I don't bargain shop at the deli or on most produce and meat, I buy organic/all natural whenever possible, which adds to the bill naturally....

We have a constant family of four, plus the skids every other week from Fri-Fri...so one wk of 4 of us and one wk of 6 of us. I would say you are doing just fine! Especially if you are including detergent etc...my figure is pure groceries.

two adults, three kids/pigs ages 5, 7, & 9, and that includes all of the shopping, household items and food for 3 cats and a dog.
and I rarely use coupons because most of the ones I find aren't the most cost effective way to go.
I just avoid all convenience foods with the exception of little splurges for special occasions, which I budget for and shop the sales, load up on loss leader items and hope they'll hold me over until the next sell. If you can get an idea of how often your store puts certain things on sale you'll know how much to buy. I try to get all of my meat and non-perishables that way.

And I love this website www.stretcher.com
also, this is a pretty good one. It has an emergency food budget and menu for it you HAVE to drastically reduce your food costs.

because everybody else has DH. My H lost the D the first days of our marriage!!

And actually, I do just let him go on and complain...don't pay much attention to it. Because he eats out all the time...or eats meals I froze for him (yes, the food to freeze for him came out of the weekly groceries).

We just don't have grocery store sales here. When you're the only game in town, you don't have to put items on sale to bring in the customers.

...but we eat low-carb most of the time (all that protein is expensive). My two kids are here every other week, and eat pretty big at 16 and 19. I do the warehouse club thing and have shelves downstairs, so I can take advantage of the closeouts at Sam's Club, etc.

I could trim from the budget, but quite frankly, since we don't drink, go out much, etc., I really don't feel the need.

Summer is here, so meals will be more along the lines of barbequed meat of some sort and a big salad...my bill may actually go down.

SillyGilly's picture

I think you are doing GREAT!

I don't know how much I spend each week but I know it's waaay more than that. We entertain a lot and are drinkers (beer and vodka!) plus have pets. And.... I'm not very good at using coupons or bargain shopping at competitors because I don't feel the savings are worth my time. Ugh...groceries...

Family of 4, SD 16, DS 8... $150-$200 a week. May the Gods help us if SD's group of friends visit more then their usual 2-3 times per week. They eat everything not nailed down... I still half convinced one of them ate that vase that went missing in the kitchen a couple weeks ago when they all hung out here.

WifeVersion2.0's picture

I live in Texas and for our family of 6 I spend about $100-$125/week on groceries.

I also played the "grocery game" for a while but once I figured out the game I dropped my subscription and now have my coupons organized enough that I can scour the sale ads and know what I have to make the best deal. I did shop at 2 different grocery stores at one point but decided that my time was more valuable than what I was saving. Plus with 4 kids at 4 different schools I don't have any time to spare!

I spend between $50 and $100 usually for 3 people and 3 cats. That's food, drink, takeout, cat food, and essentials like tp and the like. I have a pretty good stockpile of toothpaste and toiletries right now from Black Friday at Walgreens so I don't spend much out of pocket for that stuff.

hismineandours's picture

About 150.00 for me and the 3 kids (and two cats)-when dh comes home it will probably go up a little but not a whole lot-he will be home full time and likes cooking things from scratch while I rely on convenience stuff since I am short on time. i do alot of frest fruit-which drives my bill up but other than that dont' feel like I spend alot. i do go to Sam's every couple of months and spend around 300.00 too.

:jawdrop: You're awesome!! I am cheap and use lots of nearly free stuff (meet from my dad, $10 for donated stuff at a local church, etc.) Even with that, we spend about $125 a week for 4 of us (well, 3.5, considering the skids are only here eow for a whole week) We do spend about double when the skids are here, but less when it's just the two of us with the dog. Tell your H that if he thinks it'stoo much, he can come home and do the shopping and the cooking. DH did that for all of 3 days and realized that I'm awesome too. Wink

Wow, groceries aree really expensive in the USA.

I spend between £50 and £80 a month on food for our lot (2 adults, and 2 skids who visit every 2 weeks). That doesn't include pet food (1 dog, 1 cat, 1 newt & 3 chickens).

Skids get whatever they like in their homes, when they come here they soon learnt I only have so much money, when the crisps and biscuits run out well that's just tough until next month.

Kes's picture

Wow, Fuzzpuss, please tell me you mean a week. I spend about £120 a week on 2 adults plus 2 kids EOW. I don't buy any crisps, biscuits, cakes because we are both slimming. We do drink wine. Not that much, though! I must be shopping at the wrong place.

We have six and I just spent $170.00 a few days ago and I need to go again!! I hide stuff for the kids lunch or else it's gone!!

We are a family of six, Well four now but soon to be six again once the twins get their fingers/heads out of their asses and toe the line...five dogs and a macaw. Our grocery bill varies, we shop at three different stores for our regular stuff and the commisary on the base for meat. We do not shop weekly though, it can vary anywhere between $400-450 a month. We love to BBQ and eat pretty healthy foods.

For my hubby, myself and SD7 (which we have all the time aside from one weekend a month) our average grocery bill is about $350 a month. About $300 ish if I spend the time to clip coupons but thats a rarity. That includes dinner and lunch meats, milk, eggs, drinks, diapers (yes, at 7 she still wears diapers to bed!) and basic necessities. I make a list and only on rare occasions I get something thats not on the list. That helps cut down on the total bill.
