Will now be paying CS through college!!

Ugh! My DH and I were looking forward to CS ending last month when SD18 graduated HS. The last CS modification paperwork even states this. Now we find out that because the decree was issued in the state of Hawaii, although SD18 never lived there and DH hasn't lived there since 2002 the payments will keep happening for at least another 4 years!! So we're basically paying for her entire in-state tuition. And she hasn't spoken to DH in almost 4 years despite his continual efforts.

Meanwhile, I haven't been able to afford to start a college savings account for DS13, and at least SS12's mom has one set up for him that she and DH contributed to when they were married.

My parents didn't have a college fund set up for me. They were nice enough to pay for one semester of community college. I had to work full-time, then take out a student loan for the rest.

Why do children of divorce get a free ride? And what about the other kids?

And our truck is on its last "legs". We were waiting for CS to stop in order to pay for the A/C to get fixed. It's flipping 115 degrees where we live.

THIS

I can't provide for my bios college, I don't have enough funds, nor do I feel that I should have to. If I could, sure, but it shouldn't be a requirement nor should my children feel entitled to it.

My parents didn't pay for my college either, I had loans, to which I had to pay.

Life isn't a free ride, and divorce shouldn't have to provide for adults, period.

I don't know. When I read the statute online it sounds really vague, and actually now that I think about it, it says through college, so that could be even more than 4 years!! :jawdrop: Another website says until age 23 if in college, so it's really 5 years.
I'm encouraging my husband to go talk to his lawyer. I'd rather pay the attorney another grand than $33K+.

I definitely see your point. But parents of intact families can also say "I am not paying for your college" and they don't go to jail for failing to do so.

It should be built into divorce decrees as a seperate item for parents who feel that college is important.

This is when I am glad that:

1. I am in a state that stops everything at 18.

2. Both SSs were dropouts at 15 so college was never considered.

3. I met DH long after both were of age.

We pd cs until three months after high school grad. Then we pay 1/3 of college expenses between age 18 and 22 (which everyone reads to mean 'ends on 22nd birthday')

In the event child repudiates, disrespects or refuses to acknowledge parent, said child will receive no college support.

Bummer for skid 21 he decided to choose this year to turn into mini moron asshole bm.

Haven't talked in 8 months... dont even know if he's in college... lesson learned.
