Kid Party Purgatory

BettyRay's picture

It started the middle of October, SS6 was over for our regular weekend and he was all excited about his birthday party. BM told him that it would be at the local humane society. SS6 was thrilled, he loves animals.

November rolls around; the first week BM says the party will be the last Saturday of Nov. DH invites his parents.

The second week of Nov.; BM says the party will be the Wed. before Thanksgiving. DH lets his parents know and they can’t make it as they live 2 hours away from our town. DH can’t make it either as he has to work. I start getting suspicious.

The third week of Nov.; DH asks BM if she needs help with the invitations etc. and wants confirmation about the time the party will be - BM says she does not know yet. I get angry and have DH call the humane society. We find out you have to book 1 month in advance. DH starts questioning BM and she says they haven’t found a volunteer to help work the party yet.

The third weekend of Nov.; Our regular weekend - BM calls SS6 Saturday evening. SS6 gets off the phone with her in tears. DH and I ask him what’s wrong and he says he’s having a bowling party instead of a humane society party. When DH asks why SS6 says they couldn’t find a volunteer to work the party. DH and I are both sad for SS6. SS11 is upset his mom did not follow through for his brother.

The fourth weekend of Nov.; Sunday morning DH and I both get nervous knowing we’re going to see BM at SS6’s party. Sunday afternoon we’re at the party and as usual BM ignores me and only acknowledges DH if he talks to her first. DH takes pity on me and buys me a beer. DH and I keep busy by escorting party goers to and from the bathroom. SS6 has a great time Smile

Moral: Next year DH and I will be planning SS’s party.

What's a humane society party? Sounds like it might be cool and not too costly, but I've never heard of this.

BettyRay's picture

is held at the locate humane society. It's about 2 hours long for 1-10 children age 6 and over. The kids get a behind-the-scenes tour of the humane society, a lesson on being kind to animals, and they get to play with the puppies and kitties.

For a donation(i.e. fee)the Humane Society here sends out the invitations, and provides juice, cake, and pizza.

Sorry I just love animals and had to throw that in there! Glad your SS had a good time and next year throw him his own party - I would never do a joint party with the BM. How uncomfortable!

We try not to do a joint party, but this year with the last minute party change SS7 was really down and wanted us there; so we did it for him.

The joint party sucks. It makes my skin crawl. The only good thing to come out of it was that SS7 had a great time.
